3rd March, 2009 would always be recalled as a black day in the cricketing history of the world, when 12 gunmen ambushed at the ferrying team bus which was carrying the Sri Lankan cricket team to the Gadaffi Stadium to resume the 3rd day of the final match in the 2 match test series.
Cricket definitely lost this day.....
The attack took place at the Liberty Chowk, one of the bussiest places and hardly a mile from the stadium.
The 12 men were there to play a different game and it seems they almost played it n smartly slipped away without even one being nabbed killing 6 policemen and injuring half the Sri Lankan team including the umpires, leading to the immediate cancellation of the tour and carrying the team away in a military helicopter which landed in the stadium.
This a complete breach in the security of the Pakistani cricket board and the government which promised a full proof security to the visiting team, who were the only ones who agreed to play after australia and india withdrew their series.
It was very sad to see the players who went to paly their returned to their homeland with bandages and injuries all over their bodies.
What effect this incident will have on the future of the Pakistan cricket is very early to be said, but its predictable with New Zealand and Australia cancelling their respective tours schedule later this year. The ICC World cup 2011 which was scheduled to be organised by the 4 sub-continent teams is also on the knife edge.
Pakistan might be on the verge of losing the world cup also. This is a serious trouble for the PCB with no teams willing to tour there, leaving them with the only options of matches at neutral venues.
This incident will definitely create a glimpse of shadow and doubt on cricket tours in the sub-continent and also on the IPL which is scheduled to kick start next month.
Now the whole world has to wait and watch to see where this audacious and brutal incident takes the sport of cricket which from years maintained an image of innocent and gentlemen's game.
